Fundraiser Screening - Boy and the World - April 30th, ACMI

On Saturday April 30th at 2.30pm we're holding a very special fundraising event in Melbourne.

Join us for a super fun day of entertainment, giveaways, treats and a big raffle as we screen the Melbourne premiere of exciting Academy Award nominated animated film, Boy and the World. We'll also be announcing the winners of our kids jury Awards for 2016!

This special fundraising event will help Little Big Shots travel to all corners of the country, allowing us to showcase the work of young filmmakers and inspire kids everywhere through the magic of cinema. We couldn't do this without the generous support of many sponsors offering us gifts and giveaways to make the day extra special for you and your family so keep an eye out on our website and social media as we'll be highlighting many of those generous sponsors in the lead up to this event.

Boy and the World

Nominated for Best Animated Film at the recent 2016 Academy Awards, this extraordinary animated film from Brazil is a riotous explosion of music and color, a breathtakingly original and vibrant cinematic experience that depicts the wonders and struggles of the modern world as seen through the eyes of a young boy.

Cuca’s cozy rural life is shattered when his father leaves for the city, prompting him to embark on a quest to reunite his family. The young boy’s journey unfolds like a tapestry, the animation taking on greater complexity as his small world expands. Entering civilization, industrial landscapes are inhabited by animal-machines, with barrios of decoupage streets and shop windows and flashing neon advertisements that illuminate the night. The story depicts a clash between village and city, hand crafted and mechanized, rich and poor – and throughout the tumult, the heart and soul of the people beats on as a song.

Parent's Guide

Boy and the World is suitable for all ages but we recommend the film will be understood and appreciated best by children aged 7 and older.

Children aged under 7 years are encouraged with parental supervision as the film contains abstracted themes of parental loss.

The film contains no subtitles and no discernible dialogue.

The story follows the journey of a young boy searching for his father who has left their family home in the country and moved to the city. These ideas are very gently portrayed and as the boy’s journey progresses the film becomes much more concerned with issues of globalization and industrialisation. The film’s second half contains stylised and abstracted scenes of big machines eating up forests and the film is defiantly unsubtle in its pro-environmental message. These sequences are non-threatening and presented in a beautifully collaged way but children aged between 4 and 7 may need some supervision and explanation.
